Its been the worst day since yesterday

Most of my clothes finally came in from the distributor, so I got to work printing some tests to get the stencils to the right size. So now I’ve finished the digital portion of the work on the ‘Brillig’ shirt and ‘Monkey Dress’ pieces. The other two pieces will be made from stencils I cut months ago. In the process of mocking up the Brillig shirt I decided that while the color combination was interesting and subtle, the design might not stand out extremely well from a distance. I placed another order with the distributor this time for a dark grey long sleeve to layer under a red shortsleeve. I think it will make the design pop better for the show, not to mention break up the color monotony. I realized that my preference for working in greys and blacks might not be as eye-catching for a production and I was kind of afraid that all my pieces would blur together in the mind of the audience. Thats not what I want at all! I want people to leave saying that Monkey Dress was awesome!, or the Schrodingers Cat Hoody was sweet!

As I’m writing this I realize that it’s the girls pieces I’ve spent the most time on for this show project. I don’t know if theres any significance to that. I really have had a lot of fun working on these pieces because I’ve had to reach out of my sphere of experience in more than one area to get these as far along as they are and theres still more work to be completed. The dress represents the biggest learning opportunity for me in terms of draping, stenciling on surfaces that will be curved, and working with stenciling over seams. It’s also the first time I’ve attempted to deal with a stencil larger than can be printed on a standard sheet of paper. Wrangling a small stencil around can be tricky when theres small detail and it’s sprayed down with adhesive. I expect dealing with something nearly 4x the size will be a significant challenge.
