Disgaea!

After drooling over lots of figures that I found in my last post I finally decided on what to order.

A box of Disgaea Palm Figures, a box of Dragon Chronicle figures, and a box of Magna Carta figures.

I also ordered the ultrasweet 1/7 scale pre-painted+assembled pvc statue of Etna (Etona is her name in the Japanese version). This is easily one one of the coolest figures I’ve seen!

All these Disgaea figs got me amped to play the game again so this morning I brought my PS2 to work and put a few more hours on it. Currently I’m at around 46 hours logged with a few stages to go but I can’t help endlessly levelling my guys to unlock new classes.

On a related note: my roommate recently found Makai Kingdom in a box of stuff he packed from his last move with no clue on how it got there (since he didn’t buy it and nobody we know has heard of it I’m placing my money on magical space faries). During the first 5 minutes that I watched him play all I could say was ‘wow, that looks just like Disgaea!’ or ‘wow, that sounds just like Disgaea!’. I’m sure he got pretty tired of my endless proclamations that this game was so similar.

After noticing that the menu system looked nearly identical, I decided to compare the credits in the manual (like the genius I am, this thought occured to me about 30 minutes later than it should have). Lo and behold, they were both produced by Nippon Ichi Software! I’m not sure how I got by without ever hearing of Makai Kingdom since I’m an NIS fan. I’ve even read news articles pertaining to Disgaea 2 that made no mention of it. After having watched my friend play for an hour or so, I’m fairly surprised they didn’t call it Disgaea 2. My guess is that the publisher of Disgaea owns the rights to that name in the US and wouldn’t let the Makai Kingdom publisher use them. Thats a shame, because I know a few Disgaea fans that would snap up the spiritual successor to it in a heartbeat if they knew it existed.
